Health Careers Immersion Camp Inspires Future Healthcare Professionals Through Hands-On Learning
Forty-seven students from across the region explored exciting careers in healthcare during the one-day Health Careers Immersion Camp held at King George High School. The camp provided students with hands-on experiences in a variety of healthcare fields while connecting them with local healthcare professionals, educators, and community partners.
Students participated in interactive learning stations focused on nursing, emergency medical services (EMS), radiology, respiratory therapy, dental careers, and basic suturing techniques, introducing them to high-demand careers in healthcare. They also learned about budgeting and financial literacy led by Atlantic Union Bank, highlighting the importance of financial planning and career readiness.
The camp was made possible through a strong regional partnership that included Rappahannock Community College (RCC), Bay Consortium Workforce Development Board, Germanna Community College, Mary Washington Healthcare, King George Fire and Rescue, Fort Myer Veterinary Services, Atlantic Union Bank, and numerous healthcare professionals and volunteers who shared their expertise throughout the day.
"The Health Careers Immersion Camp demonstrates what can be accomplished when education, healthcare, business, and community partners come together with a shared goal," said Stacie Wind, Healthcare Recruitment and Development Manager at RCC. "By giving students the opportunity to experience healthcare careers firsthand, we're helping them envision their future while building a stronger workforce pipeline for our region."
The event was supported by generous sponsors including Claude Moore Opportunities, Dominion Energy Foundation, and Atlantic Union Bank.
The camp is part of a broader regional effort to increase awareness of healthcare careers, expand work-based learning opportunities, and develop sustainable talent pipelines to meet the growing demand for healthcare professionals throughout the region.
King George County Schools Work-Based Learning Specialist Terri Rinko praised the collaborative effort and the enthusiasm shown by students throughout the day. A few students traveled from Gloucester despite rainy weather and described the experience as "worth it," reflecting the impact of the camp's engaging, hands-on approach.
Organizers also welcomed visits from King George County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jesse Boyd, Deputy Superintendent Dr. Daniel Rule, and representatives from Claude Moore Opportunities, who observed students actively engaged in career exploration activities.
Through experiences like the Health Careers Immersion Camps, regional partners continue to inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals while investing in the future health and vitality of the communities they serve.
