TRIO Programs Expand Access and Opportunity for First-Generation, College-Bound Students at RCC
Rappahannock Community College (RCC) continues to strengthen its commitment to student success through its TRIO program--federally funded outreach and student support initiatives designed to help first-generation, low-income, and college-bound students achieve their academic and career goals.
TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) focuses on helping enrolled RCC students persist, complete their degrees, and successfully transfer to four-year institutions. Recent activities included campus visits to William & Mary, Mary Washington, and Virginia Union University, offering students firsthand exposure to transfer opportunities and university life.
Ten RCC students also participated in the First-Generation Leadership Society, connecting with first-generation college students from across the country and building leadership skills. In addition, one student joined RCC President Dr. Shannon Kennedy and Dean of Student Development Dr. David Keel on a visit to the Virginia State Capitol, where the student met with legislators and gained insight into civic engagement and advocacy.
TRIO further fosters a sense of belonging through the First-Generation Club, sponsored by TRIO staff and open to all first-generation students at RCC. The club provides a welcoming space for students to connect, share experiences, and access resources that support academic and personal success.
Complementing these efforts is Upward Bound, a TRIO program serving high school seniors from Essex, Lancaster, and Westmoreland counties as they prepare for college. This year, 20 Upward Bound students were accepted to four-year institutions, while 13 applied to RCC. The program also supports students and families with scholarship applications and FAFSA completion.
Upward Bound partners closely with high school guidance counselors, GRASP (GReat Aspirations Scholarship Program, Inc.) advisors, and RCC’s High School Navigators to provide comprehensive, wraparound support. Services include academic tutoring in English, math, science, foreign language, and career exploration, along with STEAM programming, SAT/ACT preparation, and college and university tours.
Together, RCC’s TRIO programs demonstrate a comprehensive approach to student success—supporting learners from high school through college completion and beyond.
