Rappahannock Community College Honors Graduates at 53rd Commencement Ceremony
Rappahannock Community College celebrated the Class of 2025 on May 9 in two ceremonies held at Essex High School in Tappahannock. Dr. Shannon Kennedy, RCC president, conferred 967 degrees and certificates at the College’s 53rd Commencement.
In addition to family and friends, RCC faculty, staff, and College Board members were in attendance to honor the graduates. College Board Chair Richard Gouldin, Jr., representing Richmond County, addressed the graduates. “In 1965 my father shared with me a vision [of bringing a college to our community]. Through the perseverance of many people Rappahannock Community College came to life in 1970, and today we stand here celebrating your achievements,” said Gouldin. “Your hard work, determination, and resilience have brought you to this point. We are proud of you and excited to see the great things you will achieve.”
King William high school dual enrollment student Jasmine Chen was the commencement speaker for the 5 p.m. ceremony. She spoke about the challenges of balancing high school and college. “The simple fact is that we worked hard to make this day possible despite the many obstacles we had to overcome,” said Chen. “I’m excited about the path each of us will embark on. This is only the beginning.” This fall Chen will attend the University of Virginia’s school of engineering and applied sciences.
New Kent County resident Lily Kuhn, student speaker at the second ceremony, shared how her experiences following the six pillars of karate help her navigate life. “We each have our special gifts. We can embrace our challenges as opportunities to be resourceful and persistent. Ask questions and don’t give up,” said Kuhn. She will attend Virginia Commonwealth University this fall to pursue a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.
Dr. Shannon Kennedy, RCC President, concluded the evening and said, “At RCC we believe in second chances, fresh starts, and the power of community. Many of you came here juggling jobs, families, responsibilities, and more than a few doubts. But you kept showing up and that is what success looks like.
As you leave here, know this: the degree or certificate you hold is not a finish line, it is a doorway. Walk through it with confidence. Whether you are transferring or starting a career, you belong. You are ready. And you are enough. Congratulations Class of 2025!”
