How Does Honorlock Work?

RCC Help Desk

Honorlock

Rappahannock Community College (RCC) instructors may require students to use Honorlock when completing certain online exams or assessments. Honorlock is an online proctoring service designed to help maintain academic integrity while allowing students to complete proctored assessments remotely.

The specific Honorlock features used may vary depending on the assessment and the settings selected by the instructor.

For additional technical assistance, contact the RCC Student Help Desk:

During an Honorlock-proctored assessment, Honorlock uses your webcam and microphone to record video and audio. It also records your computer screen and browser activity. In addition, Honorlock verifies your identity before the assessment begins.

Honorlock uses automated technology, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), to identify activity during an exam that may require additional review. Depending on the configuration of the assessment and activity identified during the exam, a trained Honorlock proctor may also review the session or interact with the student.

Automated flags or indicators do not, by themselves, determine that an academic integrity violation occurred. They provide information that may be reviewed by the instructor or other authorized RCC personnel.

Before beginning an Honorlock-proctored assessment, make sure you have:

  • A compatible computer that meets Honorlock's minimum system requirements
  • Use the Chrome Browser and add the Honorlock Chrome Extension
  • A working webcam and microphone
  • A stable internet connection
  • An acceptable photo ID (RCC ID or any Government issued) for identity verification
  • A compatible smartphone/mobile device when a second camera is required
  • Any other materials specifically permitted by your instructor
Use this HonorPrep Guided Tour to get familiar with the Honorlock experience.

Before beginning an Honorlock-proctored assessment:

  1. Read your instructor's testing instructions carefully.
  2. Verify that your computer meets Honorlock's minimum system requirements.
  3. Install or update Google Chrome.
  4. Install the Honorlock Chrome Extension.
  5. Check your internet connection, webcam and microphone.
  6. Have your acceptable photo ID available.
  7. Remove unauthorized materials from your testing workspace.
  8. Close applications and browser windows that are not permitted during the assessment.
  9. If a second camera is required, prepare your smartphone and make sure it has a stable internet connection and sufficient power.
  10. Complete any Honorlock practice or system checks recommended by your instructor.
  11. Do not begin the assessment until you are prepared to complete it.
Do not begin the authentication process until your computer, mobile device, testing area, identification, and permitted materials are ready.

Honorlock requires students to complete an authentication process before beginning a proctored assessment.

As part of this process, students may be asked to:

  • Take a photograph of themselves
  • Show an acceptable photo ID
  • Allow access to their webcam and microphone
  • Share their computer screen
  • Connect a mobile device when a second camera is required
  • Complete other authentication steps required for the assessment

If you experience difficulty completing identity verification, use Honorlock's live chat support for assistance.

During an Honorlock-proctored assessment, your webcam and microphone will record video and audio, and Honorlock will record your computer screen.

Students should assume that the webcam, microphone, and screen will be recorded throughout the proctored portion of the assessment and should follow all testing instructions provided by their instructor.

When required for an assessment, students will be prompted during authentication to use the Side Angle Camera to establish an additional view of the testing workspace. Your smartphone serves as a second camera and is positioned to provide a side-angle view during the assessment. This view is intended to capture the students’ immediate testing area, including areas such as the:

  • Desktop or work surface
  • Hands
  • Keyboard
  • Lap
  • Computer and permitted testing materials

Follow Honorlock's instructions carefully when positioning your mobile device. The device should remain properly positioned for the duration of the assessment when the second-camera feature is required.

Using your smartphone for Honorlock authentication or as a second camera does not exempt the device from the assessment's proctoring requirements. Do not use the device to access unauthorized information or resources during the exam.

Honorlock includes technology designed to help identify attempts to access unauthorized online information during a proctored assessment. Students should not search online for answers or access unauthorized resources during an exam, including through another computer, smartphone, tablet, or other device.

Unless specifically permitted by your instructor, do not:

  • Search the internet for exam questions or answers
  • Access unauthorized websites or applications
  • Use AI tools or digital assistants
  • Use another device to search for information
  • Communicate with another person about exam content
  • Access notes, textbooks, or other materials that have not been authorized

Always follow your instructor's directions regarding permitted resources. The use of your smartphone for Honorlock authentication or as a required second camera does not make other uses of the device permissible during the assessment.

Honorlock uses automated monitoring technology to identify events during an assessment that may warrant additional review. Depending on the assessment configuration, Honorlock personnel may also review portions of an exam session or interact with a student when necessary.

The student's instructor is responsible for reviewing relevant information and determining whether additional action is appropriate under RCC's academic integrity policies and procedures.

Honorlock stores proctoring information within its secure cloud environment using Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers located in the United States. Access to exam-session information is limited to individuals who have an authorized reason to access it. This may include:

  • The student's course instructor
  • Authorized RCC personnel who need access to administer the assessment or review an academic integrity concern
  • Authorized Honorlock personnel on a need-to-know basis, such as proctors reviewing activity or personnel providing technical support

Honorlock states that protected information is encrypted while being transmitted and while stored.

Honorlock's standard data-retention period is 365 days from the assessment date. At the end of the applicable retention period, data are automatically deleted according to the institution's established retention requirements.

RCC recognizes the importance of protecting student privacy when online proctoring technology is used. Honorlock states that it collects information necessary to provide its contracted online proctoring services and uses security measures that include:

  • Encryption of information in transit and at rest
  • US-based cloud infrastructure
  • Restricted access to protected information
  • Institutional data-retention controls
  • Administrative and technical safeguards designed to protect student information

Additional information is available through Honorlock's privacy and security resources.

Rappahannock Community College recognizes that there may be circumstances in which a student needs an alternative to online proctoring.

In-person proctoring is available at an RCC Testing Center. Students who need an alternative to Honorlock should contact their instructor before the assessment to discuss available proctoring arrangements. Alternative arrangements should be requested early enough to allow the assessment to be completed within the testing period established by the instructor.

Students with approved accommodation should communicate with their instructor and RCC's Student Accessibility and Accommodations staff before completing a proctored assessment if an accommodation may affect the testing process.

Students should contact RCC as early as possible if assistance or an alternative testing arrangement is needed.

Students are responsible for following their instructor's testing requirements and RCC's academic integrity and student conduct policies while completing a proctored assessment. If a concern is identified, the instructor will review the available information and address the matter in accordance with applicable RCC policies and procedures.

Note: Honorlock requires Chrome. It is NOT compatible with any phone or tablet – including iPads.
