As the new Fall semester approaches, the faculty and staff of Rappahannock Community College are looking forward to the return of students on August 27. Very soon, two construction projects will be underway, which will enhance the entrance of one campus, and the functionality of a building on another.
First, starting sometime in September, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will begin a project designed to upgrade the access to the Glenns Campus, which is located in Gloucester County.
“[VDOT] is going to start a $625,000 project to extend the turning lanes in both directions turning into the Glenns Campus from both westbound and eastbound of Route 33, and also to open up the median,” says RCC’s Vice President of Finance and Administrative Services, Bill Doyle.
The way the median break on Route 33 is set up currently, make it somewhat difficult for cars to exit and enter the entrance to campus.
Starting on Monday, October 1, drivers entering the Glenns Campus, can expect to see construction signs and equipment in the parking lot. Drivers may also experience periodic lane closures and other minor disruptions along Route 33. The anticipated completion of the project is December.
Next, the Justice Joseph W. Chinn Community Center, known just as the Chinn House, which is located on the Warsaw Campus will be getting an overhaul. The Chinn House served as the first headquarters of RCC during 1970-71.
Administration and staff were housed at the Chinn House while the construction of the Glenns Campus building was underway, and in 1972, classes took place in the house.
“We have maintenance reserve funding from the [Virginia Community College System] VCCS to renovate the Chinn House, and we’ve gone through a fairly lengthy process to determine just what the renovation will entail,” says Doyle.
“The bid will go out for the construction work, and we hope that by the end of this year or at the start of next year, we’ll be underway with the renovations.”
Students should not experience any disruption due to the construction at the Chinn House.
