Diagnostic Medical Sonography Degree Program Application Opens May 1

The application for admission into Rappahannock Community College’s (RCC) Associate of Applied Science Degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) with a specialization in echocardiography program opens May 1. Students will receive training as qualified cardiac sonographers and prepare to take the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography leading to credentials as a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS).

Harsha Sharma, DMS program head, recently held information sessions explaining the admission prerequisites, program overview and requirements, and possible career tracks upon completion of the degree, and answered questions from participants. Some prerequisites can be obtained during RCC’s summer session that begins May 22. For those who missed the information session, the recording and slides can be viewed at https://tinyurl.com/DMSinfo2-23.

The first cohort for the two-year degree program will start this fall. Classes will be held at the New Kent site which is set up for the hands-on lab. Clinicals will be held in various locations after the first semester of classes.

The program curriculum has received approval from the State Council on Higher Education (SCHEV) and is in review by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), the accreditation body for Rappahannock Community College.
