CHALLENGE: Students Struggle to Meet Their Basic Needs

A quarter of the over 600 RCC students surveyed this fall say they worry food will run out before they have money to buy more. 14% indicated they’ve missed class because of lack of transportation and 6% live in unstable housing.

SOLUTION: Basic Needs Assistance

It’s hard to think about going to college and taking classes when you’re hungry, lack reliable transportation, or can’t pay rent and utilities. Food pantries and small emergency assistance grants for help with a flat tire, overdue electric bill, or a class book make a big impact on whether a student is able to attend class or not.

The Student Services team (Dr. David Keel with Zaire Zackson) identifies students who need emergency assistance grants.

Inspiring Excellence

pre-engineering student

“RCC is great for young moms
who think they can’t attend college.

Counselors will work with you
every step of the way.”

—Pre-engineering student Jessica Picardat

Pre-engineering graduates can go straight into the workforce at employers such as WestRock or onto further studies for a four-year degree.

How can you help?
Give to the Annual Fund

Unrestricted gifts to the Annual Fund allow us to quickly address students’ basic needs that arise during the year. The 2019-20 Annual Fund covered no-cost Bay Transit student fares and shelves and freezers for the food pantries at our two campuses.
