NAS 2 Open Course and Test Out Exam

NAS 2, Foundations of Life Sciences, is offered as an open course and test out exam at Rappahannock Community College. NAS 2 is a FREE open online course intended to help students acquire the knowledge needed to be successful in Human Anatomy and Physiology I (BIO 141). Starting in Spring 2023, BIO 141 has a corequisite that requires students to successfully complete NAS 2 (with a 70% or better on the final test out exam) or earn a C or better in General Biology I (BIO 101). Students will be unable to take BIO 141 without first satisfying the required prerequisite.

NAS 2 presents basic biological and chemical concepts for students interested in the health sciences. The NAS 2 course is available online through Canvas and you can complete it at your own pace and schedule. The NAS 2 course offers support and information to prepare for the NAS 2 test out Exam. Students are encouraged to complete the instructional modules in Canvas before taking the test out exam, but it is not a requirement to do so.

Eligibility

Students currently enrolled at Rappahannock Community College in majors that require BIO 141.

Registration for Course

Students can self-enroll in the NAS 2 Open Course and Test Out Exam. The self-enroll link has also been emailed to current students in majors that require BIO 141.  If you need assistance enrolling in the course, please reach out to either the Help Desk or email the Testing Center at testing@rappahannock.edu. You do not need an access code to enroll, only to take the test out exam. This access code will be entered by the testing proctor on exam day.

Taking the Test

Students can take the test out exam remotely or in-person at the Glenns or Warsaw Testing Center or at an approved in-person site and will have 90 minutes allotted for the exam. Students may take the test as many times as they want but must wait 24 hours between tests. Photo ID required.  Students who opt to take the test out exam remotely may use ProctorU, and are responsible for the cost of this service.

Accommodations

If you need testing accommodations, please contact your Navigator for assistance.  It takes approximately 60 days to complete the process of registering for accommodations if you haven’t already registered.

Scheduling

To schedule an appointment, please call the Warsaw Testing Center at 804-333-6834, Glenns Testing Center at 804-758-6854. You can also email testing@rapphannock.edu to schedule an appointment.

Preparation

In order to prepare for the test-out exam, students need to carefully review the modules in the NAS 2 Canvas site. These modules contain the material that will be covered on the test-out exam. Free tutoring is available 24/7 through Brainfuse.

Test Results

Results will be posted in SIS within business 5 days of completing the exam, but will be visible in the gradebook in Canvas immediately. Passing this test with a 70% or higher will allow students to enroll in BIO 141. If a student does not score above 70%, they are advised to return to the modules, relearn the material, and attempt the test out again.  The test can be attempted again in 24 hours after the last test.
