RCC offers a new program — the Pre-BSN Specialization

Pre-BSN program

Those looking to earn a Bachelors of Science in Nursing degree can get a head-start with RCC and our new Pre-BSN program.

Rappahannock Community College is proud to announce the newest addition to our nursing program pathways — the Associate of Arts and Sciences Degree: Pre-BSN Specialization. This new degree is designed for those who want to earn a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN). Starting at RCC, students begin earning the credits and knowledge necessary to transfer to any number of four-year bachelors degree programs.

Dr. Charles Smith, Dean of Health Sciences at RCC, says that this degree was created to align with the needs of universities’ BSN programs across the state.  Smith is a member of a statewide steering committee that has investigated common pathways for associate degree nurses to transfer to four-year colleges.

“All of the baccalaureate programs share many common courses.  This Pre-BSN program was designed around their needs for courses to prepare to transfer,” says Smith.

The Pre-BSN is a 62-credit, general education transfer degree, meaning that students will earn all of their general education requirements over two years.

The Pre-BSN curriculum is designed for several groups of students. Those are:

  • Students who are in high school Dual Enrollment programs — meaning that they are earning college credit for classes taken while in high school
  • Students who have graduated high school who do plan to take a few years at home to do prerequisites
  • Registered nurses who graduated from associate degree or diploma nursing programs
  • Students who are currently enrolled in our nursing program who wish to continue their education immediately upon graduation

Smith says the Dual Enrollment option is especially attractive for students in local high schools who have their sights set on earning a BSN.

“If you are planning a career in nursing and choose to do a BSN program, such as at VCU, JMU or ODU, or any other four-year college, you can begin your studies with us through Dual Enrollment,” says Smith. “Once you get out of high school, you can complete the degree with us either on campus or online and transfer those credits immediately to a baccalaureate program.”

Smith notes that the entry requirements for BSN programs statewide are very competitive for pre-licensure students. Usually, this means there are more applicants than seats at four-year schools. He says then that students who decide to come to RCC will have the prerequisites completed — which will give the RCC student an advantage over many other folks.

Dolly Parton Imagination Library Comes to Richmond County

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a book gifting program that mails free, high-quality books to children from birth until they begin school, no matter their family’s income.

On February 27, Dolly Parton was celebrated at the Library of Congress for having mailed 100 million free books to preschool children through her Dolly Parton Imagination Library project.

Now, thanks to an unrestricted bequest to the Richmond County Public Library by Berry and Carolyn Gray, Richmond County children from birth to the age of five can be registered with the Imagination Library to receive a free book in the mail every month from Dolly Parton until their 5th birthday.

“Getting books in the hands of preschool children and encouraging parents to read to their babies and toddlers are the most important missions of our public library,” says Richmond County Public Library director Dan Ream. “Nothing can better ensure the success of children in school and a lifelong love of reading than parents reading to their babies and toddlers,” he said.

“When the Grays’ gift came to us, it gave us the opportunity to become an affiliate of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library for Richmond County. As an affiliate, we promote the Imagination Library, register children from birth to age five, and pay the bulk mail postage on all the books mailed to the children in our county. We are grateful to the RCC Educational Foundation for partnering with us on this project to secure the required bulk mail permit. The Grays’ legacy will enable us to offer this to all Richmond County children for the next five years, after which we hope to find other sponsors”, says Ream.

While the Richmond County Public Library will pay the mailing costs, the Dolly Parton Foundation pays for all of the books, making the program free for all participating families. There are no income requirements or other qualifications to register for this, other than age and location of residence. Parents can register any child from birth to age five with a Richmond County mailing address to receive these monthly books in the mail, which are selected by a professional team of reading specialists working with the Dolly Parton Foundation.

“Limiting this program to Richmond County residents will be unusual for our library, as in all other respects we serve residents from all surrounding counties in addition to Richmond County,” says Ream. “The Dolly Parton Imagination Library requires each affiliate to define the boundaries of their service area more precisely than our library normally does.”

Children who are registered before July 1 will receive their first book in the mail in August, chosen for their specific age group. Afterward, children enrolled will usually begin receiving their first books about 6 to 9 weeks after registering.

Parents may register their children online at https://www.imaginationlibrary.com/ or by filling in a brochure found at the Richmond County Public Library at the RCC Warsaw Campus (52 Campus Drive, Warsaw, VA 22572) or mailing in an Imagination Library brochure found at area preschools and daycare centers to the Richmond County Public Library.

The Richmond County Public Library will hold a kickoff event for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library in combination with their Summer Reading program kickoff on Saturday, June 23 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the RCC Warsaw Campus. RCC earns Second Place in National Technology survey ranking

Tim Hoffman, an eLearning Specialist in RCC’s Technology Department, served as the primary information collector for RCC’s entry into the 2017-18 Digital Community Colleges Survey.

The Center for Digital Education (CDE) announced the winners of its 2017-18 Digital Community Colleges Survey, and Rappahannock Community College was again among the winners. This year, RCC brought home a second-place ranking in the small college category. This marks a positive move for RCC since CDE ranked the College 3rd over the past two years.

“This evaluates how we stack up against our colleagues from across the country — in our case, community colleges with under 5,000 students,” says Tim Hoffman, an eLearning Specialist in RCC’s Technology Department.

Hoffman served as the primary information collector for RCC. He worked with the rest of the Technology team to answer and submit the survey. All of the questions required all members of the team to have input.

While Hoffman is happy with RCC’s new ranking, he’s not sure exactly what pushed the College up to the number two spot. Hoffman and his colleagues do not get specific items on which they are graded in from CDE.

“They ask many questions differently each year,” says Hoffman. “This year a lot of what we were talking about was the design of our many of our systems, including the website and other learning applications.”

Though he’s not sure what the ranking liked about RCC exactly, Hoffman says that he and the team will continue to innovate and find new solutions for making the learning experience better.

“Not all technologies are mandatory, but we have a lot of different tools that can be used,” says Hoffman.

“Our classes aren’t just ‘show up and write down notes.’ We have a lot more interactive materials that go along with them.”

The Technology Department at RCC includes Hoffman, Michael Anthony, IT Security Officer; Rhett Moore, Network Technician; Dave Newsome, Network Operations Manager; Drew Metz, Network Technician; Benjamin Smither, Evening Technician; Brandin Thompson, Network Technician; Kathy Vanlandingham, Administrative Assistant and Joe Wolski, Network Technician. At the time of this ranking, the team included Dr. Virginia Jones, who served as RCC’s Dean of Technology, but now is employed at Patrick Henry Community College.

The survey revealed insights about community colleges’ technology priorities in general. Colleges surveyed indicated that mobility devices/app support is their top priority for the coming year, followed by cybersecurity tools and testing, website redesign/updates, upgrading classroom technologies, digital content and curriculum, and disaster recovery/business continuity.

All accredited U.S. community colleges are eligible to participate in the Digital Community Colleges Survey within three classifications based on enrollment size.

Research Papers win RCC Spring Semester writing awards

Brooke Daniel and Reilly Price earn top honors in the RCC Library’s Spring Writing competition — earning cash awards after their entries were judged to be the very best.

Rappahannock Community College’s library coordinator, Dan Ream, is pleased to announce the winners of the college’s Spring Semester, 2018 RCC Student Research Paper Awards. The purpose of this competition is to recognize excellent writing and research in student papers counting toward RCC credit courses during the Spring 2018 semester. All entries were carefully reviewed by a panel of two judges — Ream and Dean of College Advancement Sarah Pope.

Out of 18 papers submitted for consideration, the first prize went to “Nitrogen Contamination of Groundwater in Proximity to a Closed Landfill and Active Agricultural Fields” by Brooke Daniel of Saluda. Daniel attends Middlesex High School. This paper was written for Professor Sara Beam’s Chesapeake Bay Governors’ School MAR 102 class, which is also an RCC credit course. In addition to Daniel’s $200 award, Professor Beam will receive a $50 honorarium.

Reilly Price of Hartfield earned second prize for “Developing a Method for Fluorescent Antibody Tagging for Identification of Female Cells in Mixed Forensic Samples” which was also written for Professor Beam’s MAR 102 class. Price attends Mathews High School. Ms. Price’s award will be $100, and Professor Beam will receive $50. Both Daniel’s and Price’s papers will soon be published at the RCC Library website, as well as in an online collection of the Virginia Community College System’s best statewide student writing at http://commons.vccs.edu/student_writing/ .

All submissions were judged according to the quality of library and Internet sources cited (including journal articles, books, or web resources), as well as the overall quality of writing and presentation. The cash awards were funded through the RCC Educational Foundation, Inc.
