Transition specialist joins RCC

RCC Transition Specialist B. Witt

RCC Transition Specialist B. Witt

“Being involved in the lives of people who are making positive changes in their lives, and are excited about their future, is an honor,” says Betsy Witt, who has recently taken the position of transition specialist at Rappahannock Community College. “It makes me look forward to coming to work each day.”

Witt works with students who have earned a GED or high school diploma through RCC’s Adult Education and Middle College programs, helping them to ease the transition to college, skills training, or employment. Her hope, she says, is to give them the assurance that “someone is there to help them through their educational and career journey. I want them to know they can ask for help with any question or problem they may face as they progress through school.”

Since earning a bachelor’s degree in social work from Christopher Newport University, Witt has spent 15 years in the fields of social services and mental health. Among other accomplishments, she helped to develop the Mathews County Children’s Advocacy Center. Counseling students who have “faced tough situations in their lives and have overcome them” is not only her job but also something she loves doing. The message she hopes to convey to these students is that “they do not have to be afraid to take the first steps in a new direction, and they can keep going even through things that seem difficult.” Ultimately, she hopes to instill the concept that a change the trajectory of their own lives can also change life for future generations.

A native of Virginia Beach, Witt has lived in Gloucester County for the past 20 years. She has three children, and she enjoys cooking, quilting, hiking, and spending time with her family and friends. She has recently developed an interest in the varieties of olive oil, and, she says, “it is on my ‘bucket list’ to travel to the olive-growing regions of Italy, Spain and France.”
