Student Support Services at RCC welcomes new staff member

RCC-SSS Counselor T. Oliver

RCC-SSS Counselor T. Oliver

“What is most rewarding about my job is the students,” says Tanya Oliver, who joined Rappahannock Community College’s Student Support Services (SSS) Office as a counselor in December 2010. “Meeting and working with each student . . . learning about what has brought them to RCC . . . and assisting them toward obtaining a degree.” Her responsibilities, she states, consist of providing both academic and personal support toward these students’ immediate goal of graduation from RCC, and include counseling, tutoring, transfer guidance, and cultural enrichment to help ensure the success, both at and beyond RCC, of students who meet the SSS program criteria. “It is my job to meet them where they are on their journey, and to provide them with the necessary resources to ensure that their goals are met,” she says.

Oliver brings considerable experience with college students to her position at RCC. For the past ten years, she has been a member of the Admissions team at Virginia Wesleyan College in Norfolk. Beginning as an admissions counselor, she moved up to assistant director of admissions, and finally to senior associate director of admissions and transfer. During the last six years of this period, she was also a Veterans’ Affairs certifying officer.

Oliver holds a bachelor’s degree in speech communication with concentration in public relations from James Madison University, and a master’s degree in educational leadership with concentration in higher education from Old Dominion University. At present she is working for a doctorate in organizational leadership, minoring in community college leadership, from Nova Southeastern University in Florida; an article she has recently written, titled “The Recruitment of Phi Theta Kappa Students at Virginia Wesleyan College,” will be published in the Spring 2011 issue of Enrollment Management Journal. She is a member of the academic honor society Phi Kappa Phi, as well as Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, in whose Gamma Delta Omega chapter (Portsmouth, Va.) she participates actively.

The daughter of two educators—Dr. Albert J. Williams and Brenda W. Williams—Oliver was born and raised in Portsmouth, and still maintains her membership in Emanuel A.M.E. Church, which is the second-oldest church building in Portsmouth, with a congregation dating back to 1772. She now lives in Suffolk with her husband, Justin Oliver (a full-time member of the mathematics faculty at Paul D. Camp Community College), and makes the two-and-a-half-hour drive to RCC’s Warsaw Campus four days a week.

“I hope to continue to learn and grow as a person here at RCC,” she says; as for Student Support Services, she looks forward to helping it become one of the best programs of its type in the area.
