RCC students honored for earning excellent grades
Several Rappahannock Community College students received recognition as “A” Club members during a celebratory luncheon sponsored by the college’s Student Support Services (SSS) Office, and held at Lowery’s Restaurant in Tappahannock on February 26. The “A” Club luncheons, held at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters, single out SSS participants who were enrolled in at least two classes during the preceding semester(s), and earned an A or an S (satisfactory) in each class.
“These are the best grades I ever received in my entire life,” affirmed Lamont Baptist; while Shanetra Weldon exclaimed, “Wow! I feel like a celebrity! I am so honored to be a part of SSS.”
Among those attending to offer their congratulations were Lorraine Justice, the SSS administrative officer; dean of student development Anne Kornegay; Warsaw Campus academic dean Patricia Mullins; SSS counselors Chimene Boone and Tanya Oliver; and SSS administrative assistants Darlene Chamberlain and Karen Lewis.
“This is one of the most inspirational events our program sponsors,” says Justice. “These students inspire me—to encourage more of our students to strive to reach ‘A’ Club status each semester.” She expressed special thanks to RCC’s administrative leaders for their support, including Dr. Elizabeth Crowther, the college’s president; Dr. Donna Alexander, its vice president of instruction and student development; Dean Mullins; Robert Griffin, academic dean of the Glenns Campus; Charles Smith, dean of health services; and Dean Kornegay.
Those receiving certificates were Ricardo Castro-Abreu of Chesterfield County; Joann Abbate, Lamont Baptist, Kristina Blevins, Alexandra Kost, and Bernadene Stammer, all of Gloucester County; Amber Brooks, King William County; Lesha Lee, Middlesex County; and Darlene Campbell and Shanetra Weldon, both of Westmoreland County. Stammer is no longer an RCC student, having graduated in December 2012 and enrolled at the College of William and Mary.
For the 2012-13 academic year, RCC was awarded $293,643 to offer assistance to its students through the Student Support Services program, which was established by the United States Department of Education to help remove social, cultural and economic barriers to higher education. The program provides RCC students who meet its guidelines with individualized academic and personal counseling, tutoring, and cultural and social enrichment opportunities. The Department of Education makes these services available through the TRIO series of federal grant programs.
