RCC softball season gets underway
Rappahannock Community College’s women’s softball team, the Gulls, opened their 2013 season on February 18. The first game of a doubleheader against Prince George’s Community College of Largo, Maryland (played in Richmond), ended with a score of 4-2 in favor of Prince George; the Gulls rallied in the second game to win 10-3.
Pitcher Alex Clark struck out 13 players in Game One, and surrendered her only two hits of the game in the seventh inning, with two outs and the score tied at 2-2. In Game Two, Ebony Tunstall had an excellent offensive afternoon with five hits in seven trips to the plate, including an inside-the-park grand slam; Chelsi Blake hit a double in addition to an over-the-fence home run that batted in a previous base runner; and in her first college start, pitcher Megan Payne secured the win, allowing three hits with seven strikeouts and no walks.
Future home games will be held on the Elizabeth Hinton Crowther Field, next to the Warsaw Campus tennis courts, on Saturday, February 23, against the University of Mary Washington; on Saturday, March 9, against Prince George’s Community College; on Saturday, March 16, against Virginia Commonwealth University; on Saturday, March 30, against the United States Naval Academy; on Wednesday, April 3, 2 and 4 p.m., against the Community College of Baltimore County-Dundalk; and on Thursday, April 11, 2 and 4 p.m., against Virginia University of Lynchburg. All home games are doubleheaders, and all will be played at 1 and 3 p.m. except where otherwise noted
The Gulls will play away games (all doubleheaders also) on Monday, March 11, against Virginia University of Lynchburg; on Sunday, March 24, against College of the Albemarle, in Elizabeth City, North Carolina; on Sunday, April 7, against Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, Maryland; on Saturday, April 13, against the College of William and Mary; on Sunday, April 21, against Prince George’s Community College; and on Wednesday, April 24, against College of Southern Maryland, in La Plata, Maryland.
For the Spring 2013 softball season, the Gulls’ roster includes Quanna Bryant (a graduate of James Monroe High School in Fredericksburg), Alex Clark (a graduate of Rappahannock High School in Warsaw), and Ebony Tunstall, all of Essex County; Ashlee Greene, Gloucester County; Meagan Montgomery, King William County (a graduate of Hanover High School); Chelsey Montgomery, Lancaster County; Chelsi Blake and Megan Payne, both of Middlesex County; Spencer Gaulding, Lynsie Hodges, and Caitlin Vanlandingham, all of Richmond County; and Alexis Rosser (a graduate of Thomas Dale High School in Chesterfield) and Brittany Thompson, both of Westmoreland County. The team coach is Reggie Brann.
