RCC prepares ecotourism guides for certification

An eight-week series of evening classes, to be hosted by Rappahannock and Eastern Shore Community Colleges, will prepare interested persons to seek certification as Virginia Ecotour Guides. This course, focusing on many aspects of ecotourism, is recognized statewide as the standard for guide preparation in eastern Virginia. Classes will meet Thursday evenings from March 13 through May 1, 6-9 p.m., at RCC’s Glenns campus, and at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science campus at Wachapreague on the Eastern Shore.

A variety of speakers from within the tourism and natural resource management fields will allow students to immerse themselves fully in current local ecotourism issues. Subjects covered will include “Leave No Trace” principles, ecosystem science, customer service, essential guiding skills, and the area’s cultural and natural history. An ecotour field trip and practice tour implementation will be featured. In order to qualify for ecotourism certification, Red Cross certification in CPR and first aid is required, but this can be obtained at the student’s convenience.

The cost of the course is $185, and includes the field trip and all course materials; previously qualified guides who are applying for recertification can take the course at half price. For more information, please call the Workforce and Community Development Centers at any of RCC’s locations (Glenns: 804-758-6750; Kilmarnock: 804-435-8970; or Warsaw: 804-333-6828), or Eastern Shore Community College at 757-789-1789.
