RCC holds Team Math Contest

This year’s Team Math Contest, held Friday, December 2, at both Rappahannock Community College campuses, drew 63 area students. Colonial Beach, Essex, Gloucester, Lancaster, Mathews, Middlesex, New Kent, and Northumberland High Schools, and the Chesapeake Bay Governor’s School at Glenns, each sent a team of three students, while King William, Rappahannock (Richmond County), and Washington and Lee (Westmoreland County) High Schools, the Chesapeake Bay Governor’s School at Warsaw, and the private schools of Christchurch (Middlesex County) and St. Margaret’s (Essex County) each sent two three-student teams.

The contest, organized by RCC developmental mathematics instructor Brenda Callis, consisted of seven highly challenging questions testing several branches of mathematics—geometry, algebra, and pre-calculus. Each team worked together to solve the problems under the supervision of a proctor, and the teams had 60 minutes to complete as many questions as possible. “We were excited to have so many students who are interested in math,” says Callis. “They were all great ambassadors for their respective schools.”

Placing first were Jingjing Jin, Becca Eudailey, and Erin Thady of New Kent High School. Yoongbok Lee, Hanqing Zhu, and Gyurae Kim of Christchurch School placed second (a repeat performance for Hanqing Zhu and Gyurae Kim, who were members of the team that came in first in 2010), while third place went to Joshua Bell, Andrea Walker, and Nicholas Jett of Rappahannock High School.

Certificates of participation will be mailed to all students who attended.
