NN master naturalists donate DVDs to RCC

As a gesture of thanks for being allowed to hold its Spring 2012 series of training sessions at Rappahannock Community College’s Warsaw Campus, the Northern Neck chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalists recently donated a DVD set of the 13-part documentary series “How the Earth Was Made” to the Warsaw Campus Library Center. Pictured, left to right, are RCC president Dr. Elizabeth Crowther; certified master naturalists Earline Walker and Faye Andrashko; Cherie Carl, RCC’s dean of learning resources; and Ellis Squires, also a certified master naturalist, who coordinated and taught the spring classes. This 40-hour course, the fourth sponsored by the chapter, met weekly from February through May for classes and field trips. There were 21 participants, of whom 14 continued with eight hours of advanced training and 40 hours of volunteer service to receive certification as master naturalists.

The Virginia Master Naturalist program is a statewide corps of volunteers providing education, outreach, and service dedicated to the beneficial management of natural resources and natural areas within their communities. Interested Virginians become Master Naturalists through training and volunteer service. The Northern Neck chapter was established to support “a centuries-long tradition of appreciation and utilization of the natural resources of the Northern Neck of Virginia.” Its goals are to improve wildlife management, including habitat and flyway protection and preservation; to provide educational assistance to interested groups, particularly youth-oriented ones; to advocate for clean water resources, with emphasis on protection of submerged aquatic vegetation; and to support open-space preservation.

More master naturalist training sessions will be scheduled when the Northern Neck chapter has received a minimum number (20) of applications. For more information, or to enroll, please visit the chapter website at, or e-mail
