New RCC Drama Club sees musical at UMW

Members of the newly-formed Drama Club at Rappahannock Community College took their first field trip on November 3, to the University of Mary Washington’s Klein Theatre. There they saw a UMW Department of Theatre and Dance production of Stephen Sondheim’s “Into the Woods.”

“We thought it would be a good idea to expose club members to how other colleges operate,” says club sponsor and RCC graduate Jessica Coates, RCC’s Shared Services liaison. She affirms, “The UMW folks were very kind to us, giving us a great deal on tickets, plus tours of the theater both before and after the production. This allowed us to see all the preparation and work that goes into putting on a play. They really gave us ‘behind the scenes’ VIP treatment.”

Before attending the performance, all of the club members read the script and assembled to act out some of the scenes. Many of them are thinking of transferring to four-year schools to pursue theatrical degrees, “and UMW looked at our visit as a recruiting trip,” says Coates. “The tour gave us inspiration, and we look forward to putting on both scheduled performances and ‘flash mob’ productions during the spring semester.”

The Drama Club is hoping to increase in size, and to incorporate the whole theater experience into its activities—not only acting on stage, but also set production, lighting, directing, and publicity. The club’s next meeting is Friday, November 30. For more information, interested students should get in touch with one of the club sponsors—Coates, nursing instructor Karen Taliaferro, or English instructor Amie Schaumberg. News about club meetings and activities, as well as upcoming performances, will also be circulated by way of the college e-mail system and Facebook/Twitter postings.
