A library patron is defined as a Rappahannock Community College Student or a resident of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
All library users are required to obtain a library card or present a valid picture ID. All library patrons, including RCC Faculty, Staff, and Students are required to present a valid picture ID to obtain a library card. If a patron is under 16, a guardian with a picture ID must be present in order for a library card to be issued to the underage patron. The guardian’s license information will be entered into the account. The guardian is ultimately responsible for any debts which are incurred on the account, until the underage patron reaches the age of 18 years old.
Your library card or ID is expected to be presented to check-out materials. If your library card is unavailable or lost, you will be asked to present a valid picture ID in order to check out materials. If an ID is not available, you may be denied your library privileges. A $3.00 fee will be charged to replace a library card.
The Rappahannock Community College Library staff respects the patron’s data. No information is released to anyone except the borrower who shows proper identification. The library staff asks that you update your record when there has been a change of address or telephone number.
Children in the Library
Patrons under the age of 12 may not be left in the library unsupervised by a parent or guardian. The guardian must be at least 16 years old and have a picture ID showing birth date.
Loan Periods and Renewals
Your library offers a variety of resources, each with their own specific loan period and renewal limit. These periods and limits are as follows:

Renewals cannot be placed on items with holds. You are expected to return materials that have holds in a prompt manner. Your name can be added to the hold list for future checkout.
Holds may be placed on any item that circulates. Patrons may place holds on items either by logging into their library account online via the library website, by phone, or in person. Your library card number should be provided if holds are requested via telephone. The patron will be notified by phone when the material becomes available. Items will be held for 1 week. If an item is not picked up within that time frame, it will be placed back into circulation. Patrons are responsible for keeping their contact information up to date. You cannot place items on hold if you have overdue or owe a fee.
No daily fines are collected for overdue materials. All patrons are responsible for returning materials by their due date. All patrons are responsible for maintaining the physical condition of each library item.

Library materials may be deposited in the book drops located at the circulation desks at each campus. The in-house book drop is available during the library’s hours of operation. Both libraries offer outside book drops located near the main building’s entrance. These outdoor book drops are available 24/7. Material may also be returned by mail using the following addresses:

The outside book drop is checked on a daily basis except on designated holidays.
Overdue and Lost Material
For overdue material, patrons will receive one overdue courtesy letter. If patron fails to return the material within 40 days, the material will be declared lost and the patron forfeits all library privileges. When an item has been declared lost, the patron must return the item or pay the replacement fee for the item, (see FEES chart). Failure to return the item or pay the replacement fee will result in the submission of patron’s debt to the Business office for collection using the Virginia Debt Set-Off program. Patron may also forfeit library privileges permanently.
If material with multiple pieces is returned with items missing, the patron will be notified via phone. If not returned promptly, the material will be considered lost and the borrower will be held responsible for the appropriate replacement fees.
How does the new printing system (WEPA) work?
All RCC students have been set up with a WEPA account. To access it, just head to www.wepanow.com and log-in using your Blackboard user name and password. From there, you can manage and add money onto your account using your credit or debit card. Don’t have a credit/debit card? No problem. Just purchase a print card from the RCC business office during regular business hours of 8:00-4:30. There are now three ways to print with WEPA. You can print directly to the WEPA kiosk, print using a USB drive, or upload your print job to your WEPA account. The last option makes it possible to upload documents from ANY computer, on or off campus! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact 1-800-GET-WEPA.
Do I still need a library card?
A lot of students are wondering if they need a library card since RCC is no longer issuing Student IDs (and in the past, the Student ID served as their library card). The answer? No. You no longer need a library card in order to check items out, but you do, however, need a valid picture ID. That said, we have library cards on hand, so if you would really like a separate library card, we are happy to make one for you. If you are a student, we will put your name and student ID number on the back of the card. Keep in mind that if you lose your library card, it will cost $3 to replace it.
How many items can I check out at one time?
Up to 14. Special exceptions can be made upon request and usually when related to specific research or course needs. As for DVDs, you can only check out 4 at a time.

How do I know which database to use for my class?
Try the Library’s Research Guides! To find them, from the front page of our site, click on the Research Guides tab and choose your subject. There you will have access to databases that will search and find journal articles, newspaper articles, and online resources and books.

Can I use my personal laptop and use RCC’s wireless connection?
Absolutely! You will have wireless access to the internet anywhere in the RCC buildings and on the grounds of the college including the parking lots and picnic tables.
How can I search for books?
Searching for books (both in print, electronic, and audio) and DVDs is as simple as going to Google. Just go to the Library’s website and click on the Catalog tab in the middle of the screen. You can search for items by keywords (anywhere), title, or author.
You found an item that is on another campus and you need it transferred?
Click on the title of the item and then the location link of the item (at the bottom of the record) and select “Request this item.” You will need to enter in your Blackboard Username and Password, select the campus you’ll be picking the item up at, and we will call you when it comes in. Items usually take about 24 hours to be transferred. Need it that same day? Give us a call!
Do you have computers in the library?
Yes. Both libraries have success labs with computers. These computers have Microsoft Office and other programs you might need for your classes. If you would prefer a laptop, we have laptops available for check-out at the circulation desk. You must be a student with a valid ID.
Do I have to make an appointment to see the librarian?
