Glenda Lowery came to RCC in 1979 to do her student teaching and has been there ever since. She received her bachelor’s degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1975 and went on to earn her master’s in 1979. Her education was briefly interrupted by the birth of her only child, Whitney, in 1976.
Glenda teaches mostly developmental reading and writing and English Composition. She was the sponsor of The Gull, RCC’s student newspaper, for 18 years. In 1999 she attended the Kellogg Institute for Training and Certification of Developmental Educators at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina and received her certification as a developmental education specialist. In Summer 2003 Glenda completed her Educational Specialist Degree in Higher Education/Developmental Education from ASU.
A native of Essex County, Glenda lives in Lottsburg in Northumberland County with her husband David, two cats, and two dogs. Her granddaughter Meredith Peyton Wilmer was born in November 2000. Grandson David Gavyn Hathaway was born in December 2004.
Glenda has lots of hobbies, including refinishing furniture, gardening, cooking, sewing, fishing, boating, and sitting on the beach, all of which she intends to enjoy after retirement. Glenda’s goal in life is to live long enough to collect all the retirement and Social Security benefits she has coming.
