Take the RCC Placement Test

A placement test is required before beginning classes. The COMPASS placement test is a comprehensive, computer-adaptive test that will assess your ability in reading, writing and math. This test is designed to help place students into appropriate courses needed to ensure student success.

New students are required to take the placement test. Allow approximately two hours for the test. Students can contact the student development office to schedule an appointment for testing. There is a $5 fee to take the test.

Review the study guide on the compass website at http://www.act.org/compass/sample/index.html or pick up a copy from the student development office on either campus.

You may not have to take this test if you have:

  • Completed a college-level English or math course at another college which meets the minimum course prerequisite
  • Taken the SAT with a score that meets the minimum course prerequisite
  • Taken the ACT with a score that meets the minimum course prerequisite.
  • Taken the compass test at another Virginia Community College with a score that meets the minimum course prerequisite.

An official transcript, SAT scores or ACT scores must be on file in the admissions and records office.

Meet with a College Counselor

Counselors are available to assist you with selecting a program of study and/or choosing classes. If you have taken courses at another college, a counselor will help you see how these courses may apply to a program at RCC.

The college has a wide variety of courses and degree programs which include programs that are designed to transfer and career programs. These are described in the College Catalog as well as information about college policies, college resources, course descriptions, etc.

To assist you in your transition to college, we have freshmen orientation and student development courses and services that are designed to help you with your educational, career and life planning. We offer a one-credit course called SDV 100 - College Success Skills, which is required for all degree and one-year certificate seeking students.

These courses and workshops are designed to help you in making career and life planning decisions, refining study skills necessary for college success, assisting you with college transfer issues, and building student leadership skills.

Students with disabilities are encouraged to contact the student development office on either campus to determine what assistance and accommodations are available for you.
