Certificates
The Certificate programs are designed to provide specific programmatic coursework that prepares students for the workplace or provides new skills for career advancement. In general, these certificates are not transferable to a four-year institution.
Administrative Support Technology
The Administrative Support Certificate is designed to train persons for full-time employment in an office-related environment. With the rapid growth of industry and business in Virginia and with the steady demand for qualified administrative assistants in this region, there is a need for trained support personnel.
Accounting
The Accounting Certificate is designed to train persons for full- or part-time work in accounting. It provides basic bookkeeping and accounting training.
General Education
The General Education Certificate is designed to provide student in the AA&S transfer degree with an academic credential upon completion of a specific course of study that represents a milestone on the path to the AA&S degree. Students in other degree programs can also complete the general education certificate. The program provides a strong foundation in the core competency areas and provides students with an advantage in transferring to a four-year institution over others who have not completed a college program of study. Students completing the General Education Certificate are strongly encouraged to continue their studies and complete a degree program prior to transferring.
Law Enforcement
The certificate in law enforcement is designed for practitioners in law enforcement and associated fields who desire to take only those courses which relate directly to their employment needs
Practical Nursing - PN Application Packet
The certificate in Practical Nursing is designed to prepare students to take the National Council Licensure Exam–Practical Nurse (NCLEX-PN), which is the currently approved licensing exam for practical nursing in Virginia. Students who pass the exam will be eligible to be part of a health-care team in a variety of health service facilities.

Career studies program options are developed and implemented as community needs are identified and institutional resources permit.
Administrative Professional
This program is designed to provide an opportunity for administrative support personnel to enhance job skills in the areas of computer applications and organizational leadership. This program has primarily been offered to the employees of the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division in King George County. Program completers will be eligible to take a certification examination through the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP).
Autism
This program is designed to increase the awareness of educators and community members who are personally or professionally dealing with students with autism spectrum disorders. The program provides an introduction to the disorder as well as information on curriculum development and methodologies for supporting students with autism.
Banking
This program is designed to develop and improve the skills necessary to work in the banking industry and to provide an opportunity for those in the banking industry to advance in their careers.
Culinary Arts
This program is designed to provide a foundation in food production and the culinary arts field. Students will receive technical education in culinary arts and food service management and will prepare students for immediate employment upon graduation.
Electrician
This program is designed to offer students with no prior knowledge of electricity or electrical systems the basic theories and practical training necessary for entry into the workforce. The program provides a working understanding of electrical circuits and wiring methods.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
The purpose of this curriculum is to produce competent entry-level Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediates (EMT-I/99) who can service the community with advanced life support care via the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) infrastructure. Upon completion of the program, students will be eligible for National Registry testing and certification in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Employment opportunities for EMT-Intermediates are available with ambulance services, fire and rescue services, hospitals, local, state and federal government agencies, and humanitarian relief organizations.
Entrepreneurship
This program is designed to develop the skills necessary to initiate and run a small business including writing a business plan, setting, up bookkeeping, doing market research, and entering into binding contracts.
Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC)
This program is designed to train students for entry-level positions requiring skills in installing, troubleshooting, and repairing heating and air conditioning systems primarily in residential applications.
Human Services
This program is designed to expose students to the structure, purpose, philosophy, and services of programs in the areas of social welfare, health, mental health, substance abuse, mental retardation, and other human needs. Students will gain a basic knowledge of the professional careers possible in the field of Human Services.
Industrial Electricity/Electronics
This program is designed to develop or extend basic skills and provide theory and hands-on training in Industrial Electricity/ Electronics.
Instructional Technology
This program introduces educators to the practical use of personal computers, educational software, and the Internet with emphasis on presentation software and multimedia production.
Leadership in Organizations
This program is intended to develop current and future leaders in all types of organizations. Students will examine the set of attitudes, activities, and behaviors that typify effective leadership and practice for the basic, mid-management, and senior management levels (Tiers I-III).
Legal Assisting
This program is designed to develop the skills and knowledge to work in the growing field of legal assisting.
Marine Trades
This program is designed to train personal for full-time employment as marine technicians, marine engineer assistants, and service mechanics for boat dealers, marine equipment dealers, and marine repair businesses.
Medical Administrative Office Specialist
This program of studies will prepare students for positions as front office staff in medical offices.
Medical Coding and Billing Specialist
This program of studies will prepare students for positions in medical offices and provides the knowledge and skills to prepare insurance and billing forms for patients and insurance companies. Medical insurance billing/coding and its related occupations are among the fastest growing opportunities in the healthcare industry
Microcomputer Applications
This program is designed to train and equip students with the essential skills needed in an automated working environment. Students will learn basic skills in computer literacy and operations of the microcomputer.
Millwright
This program is designed to prepare students for positions as millwrights and related positions requiring skill in mechanical technologies.
Nurse Aide
This program is designed to train persons for full-time employment as nursing assistants. Students will learn the skills required to assist with nursing care in nursing homes, hospitals, and supervised home-care situations.
Phlebotomy
This program is designed to prepare students to work as entry-level phlebotomists. Program graduates are also eligible to sit for the national phlebotomy certification exam.
Web Design
This program is designed to develop the skills necessary to create web pages and websites to meet the challenges of promoting and advertising businesses and services in the 21st century.
Welding: Arc and Gas
This program is designed to train persons for full-time employment as beginning welders. Students are introduced to the principles and techniques of basic oxyacetylene welding and cutting and basic arc welding.
